I don't know if you've ever heard of Hacker News, but it's a site where every commenter is a carbon copy of the author of this book. If people like them are reading it, that would explain the positive reception.
I don't spend much time on it, so will take your world on the culture, but someone cross posted an older post here a while back and it actually hung out in the top spot for a few hours.
